Smith was much influenced by Walter Pater. His followers included Robert Gathorne-Hardy, Desmond MacCarthy, John Russell, R. C. Trevelyan, and Hugh Trevor-Roper. He was, in part, the basis for the character of Nick Greene / Sir Nicholas Greene in Virginia Woolfs Orlando.
